Mayor Clara Garcia (City of Beachside) held a press conference today alongside key figures from the Surf Safety Alliance, Coastguard Beachcombers, and community volunteers, to address a recent spike in emergency calls along the county’s shoreline.

The coalition presented a unified front, stressing the importance of community-driven safety protocols. “We’ve seen an increase in incidents where individuals attempt self-rescue in dangerous rip currents,” stated Liam Chen of the Surf Safety Alliance. “While self-reliance is admirable, our message is clear: if you’re in trouble, signal for help. Our lifeguards and volunteer patrols are trained for this.”

The group unveiled a new initiative, ‘See Something, Say Something, Safely,’ encouraging beachgoers to use designated emergency call boxes or flag down patrols rather than entering the water themselves if they see someone in distress. “It’s about layering our response,” explained Coastguard representative Anya Petrova. “A bystander on a phone to 911 is a vital first link, while our teams mobilize.”

Community volunteer Maria Flores emphasized the human element. “We’re neighbors looking out for each other. Last week, a quick call from a teenager on the bluffs helped us reach a capsized kayaker minutes faster. That’s the power of community.”

The coalition also reviewed recent data, showing that most serious incidents occurred outside of patrolled hours or in unmarked swimming areas. They reiterated the fundamentals: swim near lifeguards, heed warning flags, and never swim alone.

“This isn’t about discouraging ocean enjoyment,” Mayor Garcia concluded. “It’s about enhancing it through shared responsibility. Our beautiful coast is a treasure we must protect together, and that starts with looking out for one another.” The group plans to roll out new signage and community workshops in the coming weeks.
